Week 2, Navigating the Web

NAVIGATION

What are the four (4) main points Michael Rappa makes about search?

Some points which are made by Michael about search include..

- Search engines usually display the key question which you have asked, and then the websites which have came up with a match, there are normally thousands of relevant web addresses, but normally only  paid placement web addresses are on the first page of the search. (Rappa 2005)

- Companies or businesses can use search engines to become more recognised buy having there advertisements or websites on the first page when a search is done, this helps a company a lot as if they are on the front page they are more noticed by the searcher. (Rappa 2005)

-When you are searching on the Internet , you are searching  in a small data base, which is chosen from what you have searched, all data basis are a portion of the information out there, this is what can make it difficult for some, well most people to find the right information though there searches, this is why people need to be able to no more about how to search on the web to find the right Information they are looking for! Data on the internet increases everyday , the data base doesn't always have all the right information,(Rappa 2005)

- There is a lot of data on the internet which can not be relevant to what you are searching, this is because data is cheap and people can put things which aren't relevant to your search, as there are millions of things out there which may be even  tiny bit relevant to your search which may pop up.

MARRISA MAYER INTERVIEW

Something that interests me about what Marissa is doing within her business areas is how she has been using small engineer teams.she tries to keep the teams really small which leads to a sense of empowerment (Mayer 2009) this helps the teams as they can communicate easily together and work well in a small environment to dicuss mayor issues within threre work.

Within the interview Marissa talks about Ad's which are placed on the web, in google as such, and how they are trying to make sure relevant ads come up with a search which has been made as they t can be just as helpful as a webpage, it is interesting how they can match up the certain ads at the same time as the search which is being made for a website. also it is interesting how they are also putting advertisement next to news on searches.

Marissa talk about Orkut the social networking that was launched at google, it isn't very popular in the UK but is in Brazil and India. this is interesting as they believe the Orkut is more the owner of google as they are more well known to using Orkut then using google as we, no a lot more about using google, Orkut was launched slowly within  these countries but this didn't slow them down in Brazil, also in India they wherein a different timezone, it also wasn't competing for that same resource, by launching the different product, other then google in other countries helps with recognition on google, which gives it more users over the world, and recognition in other countries.

What is an Semantic Web, are we there yet?

The Semantic Web is a web that is able to describe things in a way that computers can understand it.  it describes the relationship between things to find things around the web when you search for it. Semantic web does not seem to be a popular user for most as it is a pretty unknown product, search engines are a lot more known, so at the moment i believe we are quiet more used to using search engines.
